• Converting From Electric To LPG

  You have just moved into a new property and have only just noticed that there is no mains gas,

  everything works by electric, but you have always been used to gas.

  

  
  

  So what are your options?

  You could contact the local gas supply company to see if mains gas is in the area if not there is another option, It’s called LPG, or liquid petroleum gas.

  So how do you go about converting from electric to LPG?

  You need to get in touch with a Gas Safe Registered company who can work on LPG.

  This is very important,

  This type of work can only be carried out by a registered LPG qualified person or company.

  The best way to find a company who is qualified is to contact the Gas Safe Register, you will find their details online.

  The Gas safe register will be able to give you details of 3 local companies who are qualified to work on LPG.

  Make contact with each of these companies,

  explain you are thinking of converting from electric to LPG, could you book an appointment to discuss what’s involved.

  The reason I say contact all 3 companies is you will get different advice from each one of them.

  One may say you can have a gas storage tank above ground, while another may say you are better off with an underground tank.

  So by contacting all 3, you will get different ideas.

  On the home visit, the first question to ask is, can you see their gas safe card, this confirms they are qualified.

  The next question to ask is what’s involved in converting from electric to LPG.

  Depending on what appliances you want converting will determine the size of the gas storage.

  If you only want gas for cooking, then all you need is 2 small gas bottles and a change over valve installed.

  Converting your central heating from electric to LPG is a little more involved as you will require more gas storage.

  You have the option of 4 large gas bottles, an above ground storage tank or an underground tank.

  The location of the gas storage will depend on your property, the layout, and space available,

  the engineer will be able to advise you on what is best for your property.

  He will also be able to advise you on what gas appliances to purchase for the conversion.

  Most gas appliances come ready to connect to the mains gas supply, so they will need to be converted to work on LPG.

  So what is involved in converting from electric to LPG?

  Depending on where the gas storage is located,

  a gas supply pipe will need to be run from the tank or bottles over to the property.

  An isolation valve is connected to the pipe before it enters the property.

  From there the gas supply pipe will be run to each of the new gas appliances.

  If you are thinking of converting from electric to LPG just for cooking, normally it’s a simple job to carry out, but it all depends on the location of the appliance.

  With the central heating boiler, it will involve a lot more work, but it’s worth it in the end.

  With gas you have better control of the appliance, you want a high flame, you turn the dial and high flame.

  Whereas electric takes a little longer to respond.

  Converting from Electric to LPG is, in my opinion, the best option.
