Mobile Home Gas Safety Inspections

  • Mobile Home Gas Safety Inspections Check

Now that the weather has started to turn for the better many will be heading off on their weekends to their mobile homes to relax and enjoy the good weather.

If like most, your mobile home would have been decommissioned over the winter period to protect it from freezing and causing damage to the water heater or boiler.

The Mobile home gas safety inspections though seems to get overlooked,

Just like home, your gas appliances should be checked over to make sure they are safe to use and are working safely.

    So what could go wrong?

One of the most common problems we come up against is a blocked flue, it could be from the fire, the water heater, even the boiler.
With the heavy winds this winter many lost parts of the flue, it’s not something you normally look as most are located on the mobile home roof.
Some of the flues get blocked up with leaves falling from the trees.
The appliance will work, but if the products of combustion are not being dispersed correctly,
it could become a dangerous situation.

    Ventilation

Another big problem we see is that the ventilation grills get blocked off, they are there for a reason
so the appliance can burn correctly if they are blocked off the appliance may become dangerous.

    Safety

Many say I don’t need a mobile home gas safety inspection as the appliances don’t get used that much, not like they do at home.
The truth is they still need to be checked over, more so because they are left for a period of time when the cold weather can cause a lot of damage.

Homes are well insulated these days whereas a mobile home is not as efficient.

Many parks now require a mobile home gas safety inspection to be carried out before the season starts and they want a copy of the inspection certificate for their own records.

So what’s involved in the mobile home gas safety inspections?

The first check is to make sure the gas bottles are secured and cannot fall over.
Check that the gas bottle hoses are within the five-year date and replace if needed.
Visually check all gas pipework underneath if possible.
Carry out a gas tightness test, this will indicate if any form of a gas leak is present.

Now we move on to the appliances.

    Water heaters

Visually check over the flue pipe, making sure that the pipe is sealed and no holes are present,
now we carry out a smoke test to prove the flue has no leaks.
Turn the appliance on and check for a nice crisp flame picture,
visually check over to make sure the appliance has no damage,
but most importantly check that it has been fitted correctly and is working safely.

    Central Heating Boilers.

Just like the water heater the boiler flue needs to be checked for any signs of damage or leakage.
Visually check the boiler internally for any signs of damage or rust.
Many suffer from rust and once the rust breaks through the boiler casing it becomes dangerous.
It could leak products of combustion, carbon monoxide, through the rust hole, so this is an important check.
Check that the boiler is working as it should and safely, carry out a service if requested.

    Gas Fires

Many mobile homes have a gas fire fitted in the living area and it’s very important that this is checked over for carbon monoxide leakage.
The flue is normally boxed in and the boxing needs to be removed to check that the flue liner is secured and is in a good working condition.
The flue terminal located on the mobile home roof is check for any signs of damage, this is the one that normally gets damaged.
Carry out a smoke test to prove the flue is working and safe to use.

    Cookers and Hobs.

Check that these appliances are fitted in the correct manner and are working safely.
With the cookers check that the hose is in good condition and fitted as per gas regulations.
Visually check that the appliances are in good condition and are safe to use.

As you can see mobile home gas safety inspections are vital

Mobile Home Gas Safety Inspection

Mobile Home Gas Safety Inspection Advice

Mobile Home Gas Safety Inspection Advice

Owning a mobile home can be fun, getting away at weekends with the family as well as spending long periods in the summertime.

But how safe is your mobile home?

Your mobile home is like an extension of your main home, and as such, needs an annual gas safety check

carried out to make sure you and your family will be safe.

So what is a mobile home gas safety inspection?

Just like home, all gas appliances should be inspected and serviced.

But why we only use the mobile for around 10 weeks of the year?

A mobile home gas safety inspection is probably more important to have carried out than your main home,

because it is not occupied for most of the year, whereas the home is.

So what needs to be checked?

First, we need to find a gas safe registered company who is registered to work on LPG.

Someone who can also carry out a mobile home gas safety inspection.

You may already know someone who is gas safe registered, the engineer who checks your main
home,
but they may not be registered to work on LPG.

The best way to find an LPG engineer is to contact the gas safe register, either through their website or give them a call.

They will be able to put you in touch with someone who can work on LPG.

The Checks

First, we need to establish that there is not a gas leak, we do this by carrying out a gas tightness test, this will show up any leaks.

Hoses connected to the gas bottles that supply your mobile with the gas can deteriorate over time and will need to be replaced.

All hoses that are attached to your mobile home have a date stamp on them and as such should be checked and replaced accordingly.

Appliances

Most mobile homes have some form of heating fitted, for the earlier models it may be a gas fire, and the newer models a central heating boiler.

Whatever form of heating is fitted it needs to be checked to make sure it is safe to use.

Gas fires

The gas fire needs to be inspected, making sure the on and off switch is working freely and not hard to turn.

One of the most important checks is to make sure that the fires flue is not blocked, and is removing the products of combustion correctly.

In other words not letting carbon monoxide into the room.

As Mobiles are only used for a short space of time over the year, things happen.

Things like the flues popping out the top of the mobile home getting blocked.

They can get blocked with leaves from overhead trees, even birds making nests.

So it's vital that the mobile home gas safety inspection is carried out.

Boilers

Just like your home, the boiler needs to have an annual service carried out.

This is to make sure everything is working as it should be and to make sure it is safe to use.

Cooking appliances

If your mobile has a gas oven and hob, then these need to be checked over as well,

just to make sure they are in good working order, and again safe to use.

Site rules

Wherever your home is sited you will find all parks require you to have this mobile home gas safety inspection carried out once a year.

They will also like to see the inspection certificate and make a copy for their records.

Renting to friends

There may come a time when you rent your mobile home out to friends to make a little extra money,

We all like to make a little extra.

But you now have to get another inspection done, it's called a landlords gas safety inspection (CP12).

Even if you rent it out for one day, you will need this landlords inspection check.

Conclusion

Having the mobile home gas safety inspection carried out is all about the SAFETY side of it.

Most of the time the mobile home is empty and just like all things when not
used they can get stuck or broken when you start to use them again.

Always be happy and have fun on your mobile, but most important be safe.
