LPG, An Alternative To Oil

  • An Alternative To Oil

If you live in an area where there is no mains gas connected to your property,
The chances are you have an oil boiler to heat your home and an electric cooker to do your cooking on.

But there is an alternative, LPG.

    So what is LPG?

LPG stands for liquid petroleum gas, it’s just like natural gas but is stored in either tanks or cylinders within your property.
The property make up of LPG is slightly different to natural gas, but it’s still gas and works the same as natural gas.
It’s a cheaper way to heat your home as well as cook with.

LPG is cleaner and greener than oil and much better for the environment.

You may have noticed when your oil boiler is working that it is very noisy,
this is the oil being vaporized and blown into the igniter, it sounds a little like a hairdryer but louder.
When an LPG boiler is working compared to the oil boiler you may think something is wrong with the boiler because it’s so quiet.

Oil is smelly and dirty, but with LPG all that disappears.

Having oil means you must have a storage tank located somewhere in your garden, with LPG you have more options.

There are three storage options to choose from.

The first one is replacing your oil tank with a free standing gas tank.

All that is required is that a new gas supply pipe is run from the tank into your property.

The second option has the new storage tank buried underground,

Its then out of sight and frees up space where the old tank once was.
This option will involve additional costs on top of the boiler conversion costs.

The final option is gas cylinders,

Normally four gas cylinders will be enough to run a home boiler as well as your cooking appliances.
Location of the gas cylinders will normally be on an outside wall of the property where they are secure and safe.

Converting over to LPG is not as costly as you may think.

    So what does it involve?

First, find an LPG Gas Safe Registered installer, explain your idea that you have been thinking about converting over from oil to LPG.

You must use a registered installer or company to carry out the conversion by law,

Using Joe Blogs from down the road is a no-no.

To find a registered installer visit the gas safe register online,
you can call them and discuss your needs, they will be able to give you details of 3 local LPG installers.
Once you contact the installer he can advise you on what the best options are for your property,
the gas storage location as well as the type of boiler you will need.

He should be able to advise you on what gas supplier to contact to supply the gas as well as the storage cylinders or tanks.

Most gas suppliers will supply the gas cylinders and the above ground tank free of charge,

So long as you sign up to some form of contract with them to supply you gas.

Removing the oil boiler and installing a new LPG boiler is normally quite a straightforward job,
the pipework needs to be altered to connect to the new boiler.

A new gas supply will need to be run from the gas storage to where the new LPG boiler is located.

If you want to convert you’re cooking facilities over to gas, then a new gas supply will also need to be installed.
When it comes to buying new cooking appliances, most can be converted to work with LPG.

The conversion process is normally just replacing the burners jets.

Always check with the store that the appliance you choose can be converted over to LPG.
