LPG Water Heaters

 LPG Water Heaters

So what one is best for you?

First, we have to look at the one it will be replacing.

Mobile homes tend to have the Morco 6 and 10-litre models installed.
Some may have the Worcester Bosch fitted but, the majority tend to have the Morco version.

The Morco models have a permanent pilot which in turn is just wasting gas.

Most new LPG water heaters now come with automatic ignition.

Some time ago, Which magazine did a consumer test on permanent pilots to understand the costs involved.

The results were staggering, on an average year just the pilot cost between £80-90 to run.

That’s a lot of hard-earned cash to throw down the drain on a pilot light.

Most modern LPG water heaters now come with automatic ignition.

If your mobile home, boat or log cabin has the Morco water heater installed, you have the option of replacing it with a brand that is now one of the United Kingdom best sellers.

Forcali LPG water heaters are now the best option to choose when replacing a morco.

They come supplied with a flue collar that connects the existing flue to the new water heater.

These water heaters also come supplied with spacing brackets, so they line up with the flue.

With the pipe connections, they come with flexible hoses for the hot and cold water connections.

Each water heater comes with a 10mm and 15mm connection fitting for the gas supply.

The most common water heater to be replaced is the Morco 6 litre model.
Forcali makes a 6litre version which is a direct replacement the Morco.

They also produce a 10-litre model, again a direct replacement for the Morco 10 litre.

Should you wish to upgrade from 6 to a 10-litre model, you will need a flue upgrade due to the size difference.

The hole where the flue exits, will need to be increased in size due to a larger diameter flue pipe

Forcali also produces a 12-litre version which is room sealed and fan flued. A much better option if you need a better hot water flow.

Forcali designed these water heaters to save time when upgrading.

Now you have a good idea on what LPG water heater to choose when the time comes to replace your old one.

As with any gas appliances, natural gas or LPG, you must use a gas safe registered engineer to carry out the replacement.

Installing your new water heater yourself is against the law and is classed as a criminal offence.

You could also find your building insurance becomes void.

If you need to find a Gas Safe Register installer local to you, search the Gas Safe Register.

Ensure you search for an LPG gas engineer, if unsure you will see a contact number on the website that you can call for advice.

Once you find an engineer arrange for a site visit to discuss the new water heater.

We hope this article has been helpful in your search for a new LPG water heater.

Boiler Installation Mistakes to Avoid

When the time comes to replace your current boiler, you should seek the advice of a professional gas safe registered boiler engineer.

They will be able to explain everything you need for the new boiler installation.

In the United Kingdom, the law states that any gas appliances serviced, repaired or installed, should only be done by a registered engineer.

You should not try to replace your boiler yourself, as this breaks gas and building regulations.

You could also find you leave yourself open for prosecution with a high penalty.

I hear what you say it’s my property I can do what I want within my property, yes but not with gas.

If you undertake the installation yourself, your property insurance becomes void, so ensure you use a registered boiler engineer to carry out the installation.

When purchasing a new boiler, ensure you get the right one for your property.

Boilers all look the same these days you need to get the correct heat output required for your property.

When looking at a particular brand, don’t buy the cheapest model, it may look the same as the others, but it could be the wrong model for your property.

All boiler installations must now comply with boiler plus regulations, which is about saving energy when using the boiler.

An example would be, a new combination boiler installation must now have a minimum of a load compensation thermostat fitted.

There are other options to choose from, such as a weather compensator, but it then starts to become somewhat expensive.

A common boiler mistake is an undersized gas pipe most boilers now require a minimum of a 22m pipe size within one meter of the boiler.

The boiler will still work with an undersize supply but, not to its full potential.

It could also be dangerous if undersized, due to the incorrect volume of gas to the boiler.

All gas appliances need to have the correct volume of gas to work correctly.

The gas engineer will carry out a gas rating check for each of the gas appliances.

Gas rating an appliance proves the correct volume of gas as well as the safety side.

When buying any gas appliance always check it is suitable for your gas supply.

The main gas supply in the United Kingdom is natural gas if you live in a rural area you may have LPG (liquid petroleum gas) installed.

Don’t try to install an LPG boiler on natural gas supply or vice versa.

Every new gas boiler installation installed by a registered engineer needs to be registered.

Registration is normally with the gas safe register, who in turn notify the local authority.

Once the boiler has been registered, you will receive a certificate confirming registration.

You need to keep the certificate safe as you will need it when selling your property.

No certificate will cost you in the long term.

Failure to register the new boiler will result in the boiler warranty becoming void.

There is a misconception that by trying to install your new boiler yourself will save you on the installation costs.

The real truth is it will cost you more in the long term as well as the possibility of getting a criminal record.

These are just a few of the common boiler installation mistakes we come across every day.

We hope this gives you an insight into what a boiler installation now involves.

If we can be of help when it comes to replacing your boiler, please let us know.

Is Your Gas Engineer Legal?

Check Yor Gas Engineer

When you are in need of having gas work carried out, would you check your gas engineer is legal to work on gas?

Many claim to be gas safe registered, but how do you know?

Around 40% of people in the united kingdom do not check their gas engineer is legal to work on gas.
This has implications, any gas work carried out by someone who is not gas safe registered could void your home insurance, not many people know this.

The UK law states

All gas work has to be carried out by a gas safe registered company or person.
Failure to use a registered engineer for your gas work could lead to very high penalties.
The law states, as a gas user, it is your responsibility to ensure any gas engineer you engage is registered.
Anyone claiming to be gas safe registered, that are found not to be are committing a criminal offence and could face a term in prison.

Every gas engineer carries a card with them.

On this card will be details of the appliances that they are allowed to work on.
Before you have any form of gas work carried out, you should ask to see the card.
If they cannot produce the card, you should ask them to leave until they can produce it.

Even when an engineer produces their card.

It’s always a good idea to double check on the gas safe register to ensure they have not been suspended or removed.
When checking the register, you will see a picture of the registered engineer.
As well as details of all the appliances that they are registered to work on.
If your gas is LPG and not natural gas, there is also details of the type of gas they are allowed to work on.
Just because they are registered it does not mean they are registered for LPG, so double check if your gas is LPG

All registered gas engineers can be traced, whereas someone who is not registered cannot.

In the last three years, gas safe has attended over 2000 illegal gas work investigations.
nly to find that over 69 per cent were found to be unsafe, even life-threatening.

That’s frightening when you think about it.

When some of the people were asked did you not check the gas engineer was registered, the answer was.
I saw a gas safe sticker on their van and assumed they were registered.
To be a registered gas engineer involves a lot of work and expense for the engineer.
Every year they have to renew with gas safe, if they don’t renew, they are not allowed to work on  gas.
Every five years, they have to attend college to re-sit all their gas exams.
This involves, an exam for each appliance they want to work on.

Just because someone is registered, it does not mean they can work on all gas appliances.

To be LPG registered, they have to take all the natural gas exams, then takes the same again for LPG. That’s two sets of exams.
As you can see this involves a lot of the gas engineers time as well as money to pay for all of these exams, as well as the loss of work.

Just because someone tells you they could carry out your gas work.

At a cheaper price than a registered engineer, it does not always mean it’s cheaper.
Always protect your family and only use a registered gas engineer for all your gas works.  Always use a registered gas engineer.

New Boiler Installations Suffolk

Is your boiler struggling to heat your home, making strange noises when working?

If so, it’s time to start thinking about a new boiler.
New boiler installations are not as bad as most people think. Yes, they can get a little messy, but a good installer will clean up afterwards.

So how do you go about replacing your home boiler?

It’s a simple process if you follow a few simple steps.
First, you should contact a local gas safe registered boiler company.
You may already know of a company from previous works or through friends or family.
If you don’t know of a local company, don’t worry it’s easy to find a reputable company.

Go to Google, or whatever search engine you use, and type in Gas Safe Register.

Click on the link, you will see on the main page, a long search bar.
Enter your postcode into the box and hit find now.
You will then see a list of all local registered engineers in your area.
Now you have the list on the screen, you will see a box that reads view our engineers.
Hit the box, it will show all the engineers details, as well as all the appliances they can work on.
Just make sure they have a tick on the boilers box, If you have LPG, check the LPG box for a tick.
You will also see a picture of the engineer who is registered. That’s it, simple.
I would advise collecting the details of three companies, so you have a choice.

Whatever you do, don’t use someone who is not registered, you will be breaking the law, and liable for a big penalty.

Your home insurance will also become void.
Now you have the details of a local company, make arrangements for them to visit your home to discuss your boiler requirements.
Before they arrive, it’s a good idea to write down any questions you may have re the new boiler installations.
By writing down your questions, you won’t forget to ask when they arrive.
Don’t settle for the first company, they may sound good, but unless you see another company you will not know.
Do some research on these companies, do a search on Google, try to find any reviews they may have from previous customers.
It should give you an idea of who and what this company is all about.

Some engineers when they arrive can be a little pushy, saying oh, you need this or you need that.

Just ignore it, wait for the next company to arrive and see what they say.
Yes, new boiler installations have to be installed to current gas and building regulations, but that’s it.
A good engineer will explain all that is required to install your new boiler without being pushy.
All new boiler installations once completed have to be registered through gas safe, whom intern notify your local authority.
Once notified they will send you a certificate of compliance, which you should keep safe.
It can take 3-4 weeks to arrive. Your installer has to carry out this registration.

One last thing, with new boiler installations, you only get what you pay for.

Yes, they all do the same thing but build quality and reliability is what you want.

A cheap boiler will not last as long as a good quality boiler.

I hope this article on new boiler installations has been of help to you, should you need a new boiler.

LPG Hose Maintenance

LPG hose maintenance is something that tends to get forgotten about until a problem happens.

Properties that use LPG as an alternative to natural gas, will normally have, either a storage tank or gas bottles.
They supply the gas for the appliances.
If gas is supplied via the storage tank, then gas is supplied to most appliances through a rigid pipe, which is normally made of copper.
When the gas bottle setup is used, they connect up to a changeover valve which supplies the gas to the appliances the same as the storage tank.

The changeover valve set up uses either two or four gas bottles.

Depending on the number of appliances connected as well as gas consumption.
The connection from the bottles to the changeover valve is made by rubber hoses called pigtails.
Over time these hoses will deteriorate and if not maintained will start to leak gas.

Every hose is date stamped with the production date, so you know how old the hose is.

It is a requirement to change any LPG hose connected to your gas supply every five years.
While the hose may look good on the outside, internally it may be starting to deteriorate.
Changing LPG hoses includes the pigtails connecting to the bottles, as well as any other hoses that are connected to your appliances.
Failure to change the hoses every five years could result in a dangerous situation.

Gas, be it LPG or natural gas needs maintenance, the main reason is SAFETY.

So it’s a good idea to have your LPG hoses checked every time you have the gas boiler serviced.
Some mobile homes and boats will have appliances like a cooker hob connected by a hosepipe.

The same applies, any gas hosepipe should be changed every five years.

When looking for a company to change your LPG hoses over for new, ensure the engineer is registered with gas safe to work on LPG.
The best place to find a local company is to visit the gas safe register, you can find their details on Google.
It’s best to call them up and tell them you are looking for an LPG registered company who can change your LPG hoses for you.
They should give you details of three companies local to you who can undertake the work.

Whatever you do, don’t use just anyone just because they are cheap.

By using someone not registered, you will void your home, boat or mobile home insurance.
LPG hose maintenance as you can see is very important.

Always be SAFE.
